The legend behind “pupa with mustache” dates back to the feudal times when the “jus primæ noctis” triggered the jealousy of a future groom who, in order to avoid the imposing and unacceptable shame of having his wife possessed by the prince, presented himself dressed like a bride to the nobleman. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to cut his mustache and was immediately discovered and arrested. He underwent a trial and to serve his sentence (beheading was foreseen) he was forced to procure his best wine for the prince, as a winemaker, contained and presented in these anthropomorphic flasks which were called pupa, as a permanent reminder of what had happened. In the cellars of the Prince’s palace many flasks have been found which are now part of private collections from all over the world. Today, pupe are reproduced with and without a mustache, also as lamp bases and as plastic sculptures of various monochromatic or decorated sizes.
